TORONTO - Canadians were apparently crazy for Cook and the crew.
Wednesday night's "American Idol" finale, in which rocker David Cook won the title over pop singer David Archuleta, lured an estimated 3.1 million viewers on CTV, the Canadian network announced Thursday.
That's 18 per cent more viewers for CTV than last year's Season 6 finale, according to preliminary figures from BBM Nielsen Media Research.
The numbers were even higher during the final few minutes of the show, when ratings peaked at 3.7 million viewers.
CTV says that makes it the fourth most-watched broadcast of the year on Canadian television, following "The Academy Awards," "Super Bowl XXI" and the first post-strike episode of "CSI" on April 3.
The "Idol" finale, which featured numerous guest appearances, was also a hit for Fox, attracting an estimated 31.7 million viewers to the American network.
That's a million more viewers than last year, when Jordin Sparks was crowned over Blake Lewis, Nielsen Media Research reported Thursday.
The sixth season of "Canadian Idol" kicks off June 3.
